Historical Trades Interpreter - Garrison Baker (student)
  
Join a dynamic team at Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that provides guests with an understanding of historic military life through guided tours, interpretation, heart-pounding musical performances and precision military demonstrations.

POSITION:
HISTORICAL TRADES INTERPRETER (student) Garrison Baker

HOURS OF WORK:
Variable to a maximum of 36.25 hours per week (must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required) 

DIVISION / LOCATION: 
Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada 
Kingston, Ontario 

SALARY:
$16.35 per hour 

PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: 
May 8 to September 3, 2023

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE? 
You will: 
• Be a representative of one of Kingston’s premium and internationally recognized tourism sites.
• Interpret the life, work, skills and activities of a 19th century male baker in service in the British Army in garrison at Fort Henry in 1867.
• Produce baked goods for retail sale and provide operational support for the bakery.
• Interpret garrison life and features of a military garrison as represented by Fort Henry.
• Support Fort Henry programming and customer service initiatives.
• Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site.
• Work safely at all times and report unsafe activities immediately to your supervisor.
• Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.

HOW DO I QUALIFY? 
You have the following skills:

PHYSICAL SKILLS:
• The ability to learn to operate Fort Henry’s historic ovens to produce baked goods. 
• A high degree of physical fitness to meet the physical demands of the position.
• The ability to make bread by hand using nineteenth century methods.  

ACTING & PERFORMANCE SKILLS: 
• The ability to learn historical information, particularly Canadian and/or British military and social history c. 1867, within a limited timeframe and interpret it to the public (in both individual and group settings). 
• The ability to portray an historical character by wearing a historical costume and performing the role in public. 
• The ability to learn to operate Fort Henry’s historic ovens to produce baked goods. 
• Communication and interpersonal skills to provide excellent program delivery, customer service and effective information service to both staff and the public. 

SAFETY SKILLS:
• The ability to learn all safety protocols and procedures to ensure personal, guest and fellow staff safety is always maintained.
• The ability to follow all safe food handling procedures.
