Historical Trades Interpreter - Garrison Baker (student)
  
Join a dynamic team at Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that provides guests with an understanding of historic military life through guided tours, interpretation, heart-pounding musical performances and precision military demonstrations. 
 
POSITION: HISTORICAL TRADES INTERPRETER – GARRISON BAKER (student)  
 
HOURS OF WORK: Variable to a maximum of 36.25 hours per week (must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required)   
 
DIVISION / LOCATION: 
Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada 
Kingston, Ontario 
 
SALARY: $17.40 per hour 
 
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: May 6 to September 1, 2024 
 
WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE? 

You will: 
• Be a representative of one of Kingston’s premium and internationally recognized tourism sites. 
• Interpret the life, work, skills and activities of a 19th century male baker in service in the British Army in garrison at Fort Henry in 1867. 
• Produce baked goods for retail sale and provide operational support for the bakery. 
• Interpret garrison life and features of a military garrison as represented by Fort Henry. 
• Support Fort Henry programming and customer service initiatives. 
• Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site. 
• Work safely at all times and report unsafe activities immediately to your supervisor. 
• Embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests. 
 
HOW DO I QUALIFY? 

You have the following skills: 
 
PHYSICAL SKILLS: 
• The ability to learn to operate Fort Henry’s historic ovens to produce baked goods. 
• A high degree of physical fitness to meet the physical demands of the position. 
• The ability to make bread by hand using nineteenth century methods.  
 
ACTING & PERFORMANCE SKILLS:  
• The ability to learn historical information, particularly Canadian and/or British military and social history c. 1867, within a limited timeframe and interpret it to the public (in both individual and group settings).  
• The ability to portray an historical character by wearing a historical costume and performing the role in public.  
• The ability to learn to operate Fort Henry’s historic ovens to produce baked goods.  
• Communication and interpersonal skills to provide excellent program delivery, customer service and effective information service to both staff and the public.  
 
SAFETY SKILLS: 
• The ability to learn all safety protocols and procedures to ensure personal, guest and fellow staff safety is always maintained. 
• The ability to follow all safe food handling procedures.  
 
Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).

Vous devrez :  
• agir comme représentant ou représentante de l’un des principaux sites touristiques de Kingston, de réputation internationale; 
• interpréter la vie, le travail, les habiletés et les activités d’un boulanger ou d’une boulangère du XIXe siècle en service dans l’armée britannique en garnison à Fort Henry en 1867; 
• produire des produits de boulangerie destinés à la vente au détail et fournir un soutien opérationnel à la boulangerie; 
• interpréter la vie de garnison et les caractéristiques d’une garnison militaire, telle que représentée par le Fort Henry; 
• soutenir les initiatives liées à la proposition d’activités et au service à la clientèle du Fort Henry; 
• assurer la sécurité des visiteurs et du personnel, et protéger les ressources du site; 
• travailler de façon sécuritaire en tout temps et signaler immédiatement les situations dangereuses aux superviseurs; 
• agir conformément aux principes d’équité, de diversité et d’inclusion de la CPSL lors des échanges avec le personnel et la clientèle.

Vous possédez les compétences suivantes :

• La capacité d’apprendre à utiliser les fours historiques du Fort Henry pour produire des produits de boulangerie 
• Une très bonne forme pour répondre aux exigences du poste sur le plan physique 
• La capacité de faire du pain à la main selon les méthodes du XIXe siècle 
 
COMPÉTENCES EN INTERPRÉTATION (JEU)? 
• La capacité d’apprendre des données sur l’histoire, plus particulièrement sur les faits militaires et sociaux canadiens et britanniques survenus vers 1867, dans un délai serré, et d’en offrir une interprétation au public (dans un cadre individuel ou devant un groupe) 
• Une aptitude pour interpréter un personnage historique en portant un costume historique et en jouer le rôle devant un public 
• La capacité d’apprendre à utiliser les fours historiques du Fort Henry pour produire des produits de boulangerie 
• Des compétences en communications et en relations interpersonnelles pour assurer une excellente prestation du programme et fournir un bon service à la clientèle, en plus d’informer efficacement le public et le personnel
